The sandy beach at Sham Wan, Lamma Island, is the only regular nesting site of green turtles in Hong Kong. To protect the green turtles, their eggs and hatchlings from human disturbance, the sandy beach of Sham Wan has been designated as a restricted area the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance. Access to the beach is restricted from 1 June to 31 October every year. In addition, Sham Wan is a Speed Restricted Zone. The speed limit for ALL vessels within the zone is 5 knots between 8 a.m. and 12 midnight on all days from 1 July to 15 September (both dates inclusive) every year and all other Saturdays and public holidays.
As the nesting season of green turtles will soon start in June, we would like to solicit your support for conservation of sea turtles by observing the above regulations.
Here are some tips:
- Do not enter Sham Wan Beach Restricted Area on Lamma Island from 1 June to 31 October every year.
- As Sham Wan is a Speed Restricted Zone for vessel, activities such as water skiing, wakeboarding on banana boat rides should not be undertaken there.
- Report sightings of sea turtles to AFCD by calling 1823.
- Do not dispose of garbage, fishing line, net and hooks into the sea.
