Sailing yacht at anchor among the limestone islands of the Andaman Sea near Phuket

Thailand

Phuket & the Andaman Sea

Limestone cathedrals, flat water and the most complete yachting infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

The cruising ground

Phuket is the natural base for cruising the Andaman Sea. Deep-water marinas, a mature refit and service industry and short passages to Phang Nga Bay, the Phi Phi group and the Similan Islands make it the region's easiest place to begin — and one of its most rewarding places to stay.

Highlights

Phang Nga Bay

Hongs, sea caves and tidal lagoons best explored by tender at slack water.

Koh Phi Phi

Dramatic cliffs and clear water; anchor early and move on before the day boats arrive.

Similan Islands

Granite boulders and the region's best diving, a comfortable overnight passage north-west.

Koh Rok & Koh Ha

Quiet southern reefs for guests who want snorkelling without the crowds.

Practical notes

  • Clearance in and out of Thailand is handled at Phuket; allow a day either side for formalities.
  • Anchorages are largely protected during the north-east monsoon; the south-west season brings swell to the west coast.
  • National park fees apply in the Similan and Surin island groups, and several parks close seasonally.
