Pricing a yacht when the market slows

An asking price does two jobs. It signals where an owner believes the yacht sits in its peer group, and it determines which buyers ever see the listing in the first place. Set it too high and the yacht is filtered out of searches long before anyone forms a view on her condition.

We start every listing conversation with a valuation rather than a price. That means assembling the peer group, adjusting for gross tonnage, refit history, flag, class status and location, and then testing the result against verified transactions rather than asking prices.

Only then do we discuss strategy: how much room to leave for negotiation, whether the yacht benefits from a central agency, and what presentation work will pay for itself before she goes to market.

Owners who follow this order almost always achieve a better net result, even when the headline asking price is lower than they first had in mind.
